At the National Retail Federation (NRF) annual convention on January 12, a groundbreaking open standard for the Agentic Commerce era was unveiled: the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Developed by Google in collaboration with industry giants like Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart, UCP aims to streamline the entire shopping journey. Its core mission is to eliminate the need for users to manually connect with multiple disparate AI agents, creating a unified, frictionless bridge between consumers and retailers.

Google further revealed its ambition to transform its Gemini AI into a sophisticated virtual merchant and shopping assistant. With "Instant Checkout" capabilities, Gemini will allow customers to discover, compare, and purchase products from various merchants and payment providers—all without ever leaving the chat interface.
